Finally a UWB lock, a Matter ice maker, & more smart home gear

On this episode of the HomeKit Insider Podcast, we break down the latest smart home news including the world’s first Ultra-Wideband smart lock, a new Matter ice maker, and more.

Before getting into the news, we have an update for next week’s episode — ADT CTO Gilles Drieu will be joining to discuss everything smart home. So if you have any questions you’d like answered, be sure to submit them by the end of the week, Friday, September 27, 2024.

This week, U-tec released its new Ultraloq model with support for Ultra-Wideband (UWB). While it supports Apple Home, though, it doesn’t support the native auto-unlocking feature introduced with iOS 18.

Instead, it will support auto-unlock when used with the U-tec app. The company says a new version is coming in 2025 with support for Aliro and auto-unlock with Apple Home, so it may be best to wait for that model if you can.

Speaking of iOS 18, it was revealed that in this update that Thread smart accessories can be controlled directly from your iPhone. They no longer route through the border router first.

Other new products include the Onvis outdoor motion sensor with Thread. There are very few outdoor motion sensors so this will be a coveted accessory.

Next, Govee has a new connected ice maker on the market, allowing you to control it and get alerts through the manufacturer app. Notably, the company says it will be getting a Matter update “soon.”

That could potentially make it compatible with the Home app when Apple supports newer versions of Matter. Currently, fridges and freezers are part of the Matter spec which is likely how this is being added.

Finally, Rolling Square has started crowdfunding for two new Find My accessories the AirNotch Pro and AirCard Pro. The card is a great wallet tracker while the other is a more powerful keychain attachment.

Rounding out the episode, we have new rumors on two new upcoming Sonos products. The Arc Ultra and Sub 4 have reported been leaked and may still be coming this year.
