When an HP EliteBook works by itself but loses monitors, charging, Ethernet, audio, or USB devices through a dock, the laptop is only one part of the system. List exactly which dock functions fail
A dock can partially work. Record whether the EliteBook charges, whether one or both monitors appear, whether USB devices connect, and whether Ethernet receives a network connection. Note if the failure begins only after sleep, restart, or reconnecting the cable.
The pattern is useful: missing video with working USB differs from a dock that is not detected at all.
Identify every component in the connection
Record the full EliteBook model, dock model, dock power-supply wattage, cable type, monitor models, and adapters. A USB-C connector does not guarantee that every cable supports the same charging, video, or data features. Some docks require their own correct power supply in addition to the laptop connection.
Create a simple isolation test
- Shut down the laptop and disconnect the dock from power.
- Remove monitors, storage, Ethernet, and USB accessories.
- Reconnect the dock’s correct power supply.
- Connect only the EliteBook with the intended host cable.

Charging through the dock
